The event is taking place in Dakar, Senegal, on April 24-25, 2012, and it will be co-locaed with the CAAST-Net internal Workshop for Coordination & Support Actions (CSA), taking place on April 27, 2012.

This conference is hosted by the Ministry of Scientific Research of Senegal. Preparation and implementation of the conference is supported by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology of Kenya, the International Bureau of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, and the Science and Technology Policy Research Institute, Ghana through the EU-funded project CAAST-Net.

Conceived as an opportunity to enrich and strengthen the Africa-Europe STI cooperation relationship through providing a forum for exchange of opinions, sharing and mutual learning between stakeholders and experts from Africa and Europe, the conference will explore a range of issues related to the role of innovation systems and policies in the context of bi-regional cooperation, with a view to enhancing the contributions of R&D to identifying solutions to global challenges.

The consultation workshop on the implementation of the Niger NREN began Tuesday, November 15, 2011, under the patronage of HE Mamadou Diallo Youba, Minister of Secondary and Higher Education and Scientific Research. Before the opening address by the Minister, Dr Boubakar Barry, Coordinator at the AAU REN Unit, contextualised the process of implementation of the Niger REN and the overall process of the formation of national entities in West Africa and Central Africa within the framework of WACREN.

A few weeks later, the 28 and 29 November 2011, in collaboration with the Association of African Universities, a workshop under the patronage of the President of the Republic, under the chairmanship of the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and co-chair Minister of Posts and ICT, took place in Abidjan. This important workshop was attended by all partners in education and research, has created the Ivorian Telecommunication Network for Education and Research (RITER). The workshop also identified the strategic directions of RITER and makes recommendations to the place of the Ivorian Government.

The CIO East Africa CIO 100 Annual Awards recognise institutions that deploy ICT in an innovative manner while bringing out business value at the same time. The award was issued at a special gala and dinner ceremony hosted by CIO East Africa at the Safari Park Hotel in Kenya.

One of its foremost goals is to build networks of researchers and synergies with other cooperative health projects in Africa (e.g., led by Europe and the United States).

The ultimate aim of this project is to set up sustainable African networks of health researchers, educators and workers in order to improve healthcare and research across the African continent mediated by ICT.

The event, taking place at the Stanhope Hotel in Brussels, Belgium on Dec. 5, 2011, aims at identifying the policy and business requirements that foster ICT-based entrepreneurship and bottom-up developments in Africa by looking at best practices examples. The debate will be based on the presentation of a study conducted by Hystra and Ashoka on the concrete contribution of technologies to social and economic development in developing countries.

The study called “Leveraging Information and Communication Technology for the Base of the Pyramid – Innovative business models in education, health, agriculture and financial services” was commissioned by Orange France Telecom, the French Agency for Development (AFD), Ericsson, TNO and the Interchurch Organisation for Development Cooperation (ICCO).
